Painting 101
for Calgary Homeowners

Never hired a painter before? Not sure what questions to ask? This is everything you need to know β€” plain and simple.

What to know before you get a quote

Most homeowners go into painting projects blind. These are the things that will save you time, money, and headaches.

πŸ“‹

What's in a painting estimate?

A proper estimate should cover labour, materials, number of coats, surface prep, and cleanup. If it just says a flat number with no breakdown β€” ask for detail.

πŸ”

How to compare quotes fairly

Low quotes often cut corners on prep β€” the step that determines how long your paint job actually lasts. Compare scope, not just price.

πŸ’¬

5 questions to ask your painter

Ask: How many coats? Will you prime? What brand of paint? How do you handle damage found during prep? What's your clean-up process?

🏠

Interior vs exterior β€” what's different?

Different paint chemistry, different prep requirements, different timelines. Exterior work is weather-dependent. Interior can be done year-round.

πŸ“…

How long does a job take?

A standard interior room takes 1–2 days. A full house interior is typically 3–5 days. Exterior depends heavily on size and surface condition.

Which finish goes where?

The finish (sheen level) affects how durable, washable, and light-reflective your paint is. Here's the cheat sheet.

Flat / Matte
No sheen

Hides wall imperfections well. Not easy to wipe clean β€” marks tend to smear.

Best for: Adult bedrooms, ceilings, low-traffic areas
Eggshell
Subtle glow

The most popular finish for a reason. Looks soft, cleans up reasonably well, works almost everywhere.

Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways
Satin
Smooth sheen

More durable than eggshell. Easy to wipe down. Slight shine makes colours pop a little more.

Best for: Kids rooms, kitchens, family rooms
Semi-Gloss
Noticeable shine

Very washable and moisture-resistant. Does show surface imperfections more than flatter finishes.

Best for: Bathrooms, trim, doors, window frames
High-Gloss
Mirror-like shine

Maximum durability and washability. Very unforgiving of imperfections β€” walls need to be perfectly smooth.

Best for: Cabinets, furniture, statement trim

How to get your home ready before painters arrive

A little prep on your end makes the job faster, smoother, and cheaper. Here's exactly what to do.

Clear countertops and shelves in kitchens or bathrooms near painted surfaces

Point out any existing damage β€” cracks, holes, water stains β€” so the team can factor it in

Keep pets in a separate area or off-site for the day β€” paint fumes and open doors aren't a safe combo

For exterior jobs: move vehicles out of the driveway and cover any plants near the house

Have your colour choices confirmed before the job starts β€” changing mid-project can affect timeline and cost

When's the best time to paint in Calgary?

Calgary's climate is unique β€” chinooks, cold snaps, and UV intensity all affect exterior painting timelines. Here's what to know.

βœ“ Best

Late Spring (May–June)

Mild, stable temperatures and long daylight hours make this an ideal window for both interior and exterior work. Book early β€” the May–September season fills up fast in Calgary.

βœ“ Best

Summer (July–August)

Prime painting weather. Warm, dry conditions let exterior paint cure properly, and interior jobs move quickly with good airflow.

βœ“ Best

Early Fall (September)

Still warm enough for exterior paint to cure correctly and often less busy than mid-summer. A great time to squeeze in interior or exterior work before the cold arrives.

βœ— Avoid

Off-Season (October–April)

Cold temperatures, snow, and unpredictable chinooks make exterior painting unreliable in Calgary. Based on our experience, May through September is the proper window for any paint work β€” interior or exterior.

How to keep your paint job looking great

A quality paint job can last 10+ years with basic care. Here's how to protect your investment.

⏳

Let it cure before cleaning

Paint is dry to the touch in hours but takes 30 days to fully cure. Avoid scrubbing painted walls in the first month.

🧽

How to clean painted walls

Use a damp cloth with mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive sponges. Blot, don't scrub. Test in a hidden spot if you're unsure.

πŸ“†

When to repaint vs. touch up

If you're patching more than 3–4 spots per wall, or the colour has faded significantly, a full repaint will look better than patchwork.

🌧️

Exterior: watch for early signs

Peeling, cracking, or chalking paint means the surface is no longer protected. Catching it early prevents expensive wood damage underneath.

πŸ—“οΈ

Typical repaint timelines

Interior walls: 7–10 years. Interior trim: 5–8 years. Exterior: 5–7 years in Calgary's climate. High-traffic areas like hallways may need it sooner.

Questions we get all the time

Straight answers to the stuff people Google at 11pm before calling a painter.

Not always β€” but if you're making a dramatic colour change, painting over bare drywall, or covering stains, priming is essential. Skipping it leads to uneven coverage and can cost you an extra coat of paint.
Two coats is standard for any quality job. One coat is almost always insufficient β€” it will look patchy, especially in bright light. Going from dark to light colour? You may need three.
For most interior jobs, yes β€” though expect some fumes and disruption room by room. Low-VOC paints help significantly. Exterior work usually doesn't affect living inside at all.
Most professional painters supply the paint as part of the quote β€” they have trade accounts and know the right products. You choose the colour; they handle the rest. If you supply paint, make sure you get enough.
Calgary's natural light is strong and shifts with seasons. Warm neutrals (greige, warm white, soft taupe) and cool greys tend to look best in our light. Always test a large sample patch β€” paint colours look different on a chip than on a full wall.
Minor drywall repairs are typically included. Significant water damage, rot, or structural issues will be flagged and quoted separately before work continues β€” a good contractor never proceeds on major repairs without telling you first.
Yes β€” significantly. Premium paints have better pigment, coverage, and durability. Cheap paint often needs more coats to get even coverage, meaning the "savings" disappear fast. At B&R Painting, we exclusively use Dulux paint on every job β€” no other brand is used or recommended. It's a proven, high-quality product that holds up beautifully in Calgary's climate.
