Painting 101
for Calgary Homeowners
Never hired a painter before? Not sure what questions to ask? This is everything you need to know β plain and simple.
Before You Hire
What to know before you get a quote
Most homeowners go into painting projects blind. These are the things that will save you time, money, and headaches.
What's in a painting estimate?
A proper estimate should cover labour, materials, number of coats, surface prep, and cleanup. If it just says a flat number with no breakdown β ask for detail.
How to compare quotes fairly
Low quotes often cut corners on prep β the step that determines how long your paint job actually lasts. Compare scope, not just price.
5 questions to ask your painter
Ask: How many coats? Will you prime? What brand of paint? How do you handle damage found during prep? What's your clean-up process?
Interior vs exterior β what's different?
Different paint chemistry, different prep requirements, different timelines. Exterior work is weather-dependent. Interior can be done year-round.
How long does a job take?
A standard interior room takes 1β2 days. A full house interior is typically 3β5 days. Exterior depends heavily on size and surface condition.
Paint Finishes
Which finish goes where?
The finish (sheen level) affects how durable, washable, and light-reflective your paint is. Here's the cheat sheet.
Hides wall imperfections well. Not easy to wipe clean β marks tend to smear.
The most popular finish for a reason. Looks soft, cleans up reasonably well, works almost everywhere.
More durable than eggshell. Easy to wipe down. Slight shine makes colours pop a little more.
Very washable and moisture-resistant. Does show surface imperfections more than flatter finishes.
Maximum durability and washability. Very unforgiving of imperfections β walls need to be perfectly smooth.
Prep Checklist
How to get your home ready before painters arrive
A little prep on your end makes the job faster, smoother, and cheaper. Here's exactly what to do.
Clear countertops and shelves in kitchens or bathrooms near painted surfaces
Point out any existing damage β cracks, holes, water stains β so the team can factor it in
Keep pets in a separate area or off-site for the day β paint fumes and open doors aren't a safe combo
For exterior jobs: move vehicles out of the driveway and cover any plants near the house
Have your colour choices confirmed before the job starts β changing mid-project can affect timeline and cost
Calgary Seasons
When's the best time to paint in Calgary?
Calgary's climate is unique β chinooks, cold snaps, and UV intensity all affect exterior painting timelines. Here's what to know.
Late Spring (MayβJune)
Mild, stable temperatures and long daylight hours make this an ideal window for both interior and exterior work. Book early β the MayβSeptember season fills up fast in Calgary.
Summer (JulyβAugust)
Prime painting weather. Warm, dry conditions let exterior paint cure properly, and interior jobs move quickly with good airflow.
Early Fall (September)
Still warm enough for exterior paint to cure correctly and often less busy than mid-summer. A great time to squeeze in interior or exterior work before the cold arrives.
Off-Season (OctoberβApril)
Cold temperatures, snow, and unpredictable chinooks make exterior painting unreliable in Calgary. Based on our experience, May through September is the proper window for any paint work β interior or exterior.
After the Job
How to keep your paint job looking great
A quality paint job can last 10+ years with basic care. Here's how to protect your investment.
Let it cure before cleaning
Paint is dry to the touch in hours but takes 30 days to fully cure. Avoid scrubbing painted walls in the first month.
How to clean painted walls
Use a damp cloth with mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive sponges. Blot, don't scrub. Test in a hidden spot if you're unsure.
When to repaint vs. touch up
If you're patching more than 3β4 spots per wall, or the colour has faded significantly, a full repaint will look better than patchwork.
Exterior: watch for early signs
Peeling, cracking, or chalking paint means the surface is no longer protected. Catching it early prevents expensive wood damage underneath.
Typical repaint timelines
Interior walls: 7β10 years. Interior trim: 5β8 years. Exterior: 5β7 years in Calgary's climate. High-traffic areas like hallways may need it sooner.
